The feature article of the latest issue focusses on the topic of Guerilla gardening and yarn bombing. As a nod to Guerilla warfare I created a series of harmless weapons from various materials (some of which are edible). A jelly grenade, a feather blade knife, bread knuckle dusters; I created a total of 6 weapon models as well as my own take on the iconic Che Guevara image for the opener. I was commissioned to create the cover image and interior feature spreads for the latest issue of Computer Arts. The feature article is 'Designing Mobile Apps' and so I decided to create a wooden toy style phone where the apps are represented as wooden blocks than can slot in and out and be repositioned. I have had a pretty busy and exciting month. Aside from moving house, I spent a great week in New York for the ADC exhibition opening ceremony. The exhibition which opens on Friday 26th August at Sassoon Gallery, will showcase a number of artists and designers reposes to the nails. The project was set up to explore the creative potential of nail art. I was sent a set of acrylic nails through the post and I couldn't resist covering them in...nails! The theme of the issue is "Thats the funny thing about design". One of the articles, written by Mark Ferguson, is entitled 'Is it worth wit?' and discusses the significance of graphic wit. Last years' Handmade issue was a huge success and has since gained many awards including a yellow pencil at D&AD for its custom covers. I therefore feel very privileged to have been asked to work on the contributors page for this years issue. I have created the portraits from different coloured pencil shavings. Advertising creatives Nick Pringle and Clarke Edwards have approached a selection of their favourite 'image makers' to produce an alternative invite for the Royal Wedding. I feel very honoured to exhibit alongside some great creatives such as Craig Ward, Andy Smith, HelloVon, Village Green, Crispin Finn and David Wilson. Here are a few which I thought I would mention. Firstly, 'Frame' magazine did a spread on my Selfridges displays just before Christmas. The lovely little publication 'MiND' had an interview with me and wrote a feature for their latest issue. I was on the front cover of American design magazine 'HOW' last month. 'Cardboard Book' is a new book which showcases examples of designers and architects who use cardboard. My 'Disposable Technology' project was featured. Each trophy represents one of the 11 categories of award including 'Designer of the Year', 'Best New Hotel' and 'Best Public Building'. The trophies form the identity for the awards and feature on the front cover of the February edition of Wallpaper* (in shops now) where you are able to scratch away at the trophies to reveal the award winners. I was asked to create an image which incorporates the numbers '0211' in a subtle and abstract way for the February features opener. I decided to take a trip down to my local scrap yard and collect lots of circuit boards. I then pieced together the image using various components including a computer cooling fan to represent the '0'. The windows depict a dark wonderland of creeping foliage, twisting branches and pagan pilgrims on a journey towards a glowing hand-crafted golden temple. Gestalten have released yet another brilliant showcase of creative work in 'Playful Type 2'. I used to love building things out of matchsticks and lollypop sticks as a child so I thought I'd have a go at using them again. As well as this dragonfly which I have just finished, I plan on making at least a couple more insects. Strangely, I'm finding it necessary to use my teeth to help create the curved matchsticks. He was first and foremost a doctor and scientist, but spent a lot of time piecing together amazing illustrations which often draw parallels with nature and machines. I'm currently reading a book about this life, and the book contains a full sized poster of his most famous piece "Man as an Industrial Palace". Needless to say the poster is now on my wall. I love the level of detail and humour in his visual metaphors. To promote the book, Liberty asked me to create a window installation using the photos from the book. Re-creating a pose from one of the photos, I sculpted a life-sized geometric figure out of the pictures. It is so wonderful to see so much creativity and welcoming people around in my home town. One project that really stood out for me today was the 'Bread Birdhouses', an installation by Nathan Burr. I love how ridiculously surreal and clever this idea is, and whilst I did not actually witness any birds eating it, I can certainly picture the image! My friend Ashley has created a limited edition set of 'commuters pillows'. They are handmade 3-colour screen printed pillow cases, lovingly stuffed and stitched resulting in a marvellous product. My good friend and supremely talented director David Wilson, and myself attended Model World 2010 at the Brighton Centre. Upon our arrival we realised that we bridged the age gap, as the majority of people there were either younger than 14 or older than 50. We watched a model re-inactment of a WW2 battle, the titanic hitting an iceberg, a lego space station and to top it all off, we had a ride on a miniature railway! Childhood fantasy comes to mind. I spent the evening at the Sloan Street store, dressing the displays with Rebecca Cocks, a regular designer for Hermes, and Creea, window construction specialists. In order to re-inforce their company name, they set me the challenge of assembling an old typewriter from scratch and documenting my efforts. My hands were black from oil after handing all of the individual components! The band asked me to create something 'iconic'. That is quite possibly the scariest thing to ever ask a designer in my opinion! Well...the band are giving me the thumbs up with what I am producing for them, which is good enough for me! In a direct reference to their band name, I have created a hand made-police badge to form the basis for the imagery. I am going to be covering 40 musical instruments of various types and sizes in manuscript paper. I am also covering a handful of suitcases in old ordinance survey maps. As of this week, I am moving into York Place Studios in Brighton. It is situated very close to the Laines and houses a collection of creative individuals including a painter, graphic designer, Illustrator, jewellery maker and textile designer. As well as being divided into studios, it also has a shop which sells the most amazing hand-made leather goods by Wolfram Lohr. The shop also doubles as a mini gallery space, and as a new resident, I am able to have my Mobile Evolution Project on display in the window. The degree show poster that I produced with Josh White and Rory Taylor is being showcased in the upcoming book 'Hair'em Scare'em'. On completion, the objects will be displayed at the Liberty building on Regent Street as part of a big display for the Hermes brand. We were literally still working on finishing the exhibition as people started coming in. It was a brilliant evening and the feedback was excellent. The event was a gathering of finalists who entered the competition, set by Penguin to re-design the book jacket for Donna Tartt's "The Secret History". This year, 3 recent design graduates from the University of Brighton, including myself got selected to attend. Sarah Prismall and I got Shortlisted for the award, while Lucy Pritchett got 3rd place. I'm currently working on a project about our consumer relationship with technology. Im looking at obsolescence and how technology evolves so fast that we expect things to break or get replaced by 'new and improved' products within a very short space of time. Most people know the feeling when you buy a new camera or phone, only to find out that a month later, a better model has been released! Oooh the frustration! Technological items are now said to be effectively 'disposable' because of this and living in our 'throw-away society' just adds to the issue. My solution... Cardboard Technology! It has proven to be a real challenge - my first animation shot in broad daylight! I have been working on a little project recently where I wanted to get across the idea of 'teamwork' in a simple graphic image. Unlike most of my work which seems to be predominantly 3D, I thought I would have a go at a poster for a change!I am now sufficiently covered in red and blue paint and will no doubt be spending the next couple of days trying to get it out from beneath my finger nails.
